Skin Biopsy techniques are easily mastered with instruction and practice and can be performed in the office setting with a minimum of supplies and equipment. This workshop curriculum teaches physicians the basics of skin lesion identification and demonstrates three skin biopsy techniques: the shave or saucerization biopsy, the punch biopsy, and the elliptical excision biopsy, while providing practice using pigs' feet. The program is designed for physicians who may have had some training in dermatology, but who do not routinely perform skin biopsies. It is the first step in building the technical proficiency necessary to use these procedures on patients.
The module includes: a course syllabus, a demonstration DVD, a PowerPoint presentation of common skin problems in adults, cases for discussion, and participant handouts including, a quick reference procedural cue card, post-procedural instructions for patients, an evaluation form, and a bibliography.
