Step 5: Introduction to Quality Improvement Coaching

This multimedia resource is designed to teach you core coaching skills and help you practice applying those skills to support physicians as they implement Quality Improvement (QI) initiatives. It is part of a broader ACP initiative that is designed to empower and engage clinicians in meaningful QI programs that address quality gaps and improve patient care.

This program provides knowledge, tools, and strategies that support physicians in their ability to:

  • Articulate the fundamental differences between coaching and mentoring.
  • Identify the core coaching skills necessary to deliver effective coaching sessions (listening, reflecting, asking powerful questions).
  • Practice core coaching skills.
  • Recognize how to apply coaching skills to meet the needs of physicians at different stages of QI implementation.

Accreditation:

The American College of Physicians (ACP) is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

The ACP designates this enduring material for a maximum of 1.5 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s)TM. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

Successful completion of this CME activity, which includes participation in the evaluation component, enables the participant to earn up to 1.5 practice assessment MOC point and patient safety MOC credit in the American Board of Internal Medicine’s (ABIM) Maintenance of Certification (MOC) program. Participants will earn MOC points equivalent to the amount of CME credits claimed for the activity. It is the provider’s responsibility to submit participant completion information to ACCME for the purpose of granting ABIM MOC credit.
